Scholarship Facts for Four Year Institutions

The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) allows each division 1 college baseball program 11.78 scholarships and each division 2 program is allowed 9. NCAA division 3 schools do not offer athletically related scholarships. NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics>) colleges can offer a maximum of 12 scholarships.

Not all college athletic scholarships are full rides like, for example, basketball. Most are equivalency sports like baseball. This basically means that a coach can divide his total scholarships between a larger number of players. This could mean 25% partial instead of 12 full ride scholarships. If you are a top player then a full ride baseball scholarship is always a possibility. Unfortunately, obtaining a full ride scholarship for an Australian player can be difficult until a coach has seen you play in the U.S. or you have previous collegiate playing experience.

There are 287 division I and 227 division II colleges that offer NCAA baseball scholarships. That's a total of 5,423 in the NCAA alone.

If it's your dream to play NCAA Division I or II baseball as a freshman (first year player), you must initially register and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. Take a look at the NCAA Academic Eligibility section to see what initial-eligibility standards apply to you.

The NCAA eligibility Centre is an agency of the National Collegiate Athletic Association that certifies the initial eligibility of all perspective student-athletes who register to compete as a freshman athlete at NCAA Division I and II member institutions.

The NCAA division 1 College World Series takes place each year in Omaha, Nebraska, the permanent home of the championship since 1950.

    Things to Consider

It is important to remember the top division I colleges many of which are big schools usually have a large number of potential recruits. The competition is tough and unless you are an extremely talented ballplayer you won’t receive a scholarship offer. There is nothing wrong with smaller division I, division II or NAIA colleges. What would you rather have a partial or full baseball scholarship at a division II school or the offer of a walk on (zero scholarship and zero security) at one of the top schools? At the end of the day it’s your education that's important.

    Junior College Baseball Scholarships

If you want the best shot at a college baseball scholarship then you should think going to a Junior or Community College (2 year institution). There are many advantages including:

    • Smaller roster sizes (generally).
    • More scholarships available.
    • Cheaper yearly tuition.
    • Greater opportunity to play in your first 2 years of college baseball.
    • Chance to showcase your skills for 2 years in an effort to secure a full scholarship to a larger, more prominent NCAA or NAIA baseball program.

The NJCAA (National Junior Colleges Athletic Association) division 1 College World Series is held in Grand Junction, Colorado. I was fortunate enough to be a part of the 2005 New Mexico Thunderbirds National Championship program where 14,000 spectators filled Suplizio Field each night to watch us play.
